Introductions to Anarchism

January 29, 2014

ex_worker_anarchistsWe’re always excited to hear about folks introductions to anarchism and are very interested in the ways that anarchist ideas and concepts are introduced to people outside of the existing anarchist milieu. So naturally, we were very excited when we learned that a recent episode of Crimethinc’s The Ex-Worker podcast was going to explore that very topic. In episode 16, “Back to Black” Crimethinc explores the topic. However, rather than put forth either an argument aimed at…

Responding to Climate Change in Grand Rapids

January 11, 2014

As the ecological crisis deepens, it’s increasingly hard to ignore. With the rising temperatures and rising sea levels, increasingly erratic weather, droughts and hurricanes, etc, there is little debate that the climate is changing. It’s primarily now a question of how to respond. While there are still those who would prefer to deny that it’s happening or advocate a path of inaction, increasingly governments and environmental organizations are making recommendations on how to respond. Introducing Black Seed – A New Anarchist Publication

December 17, 2013

black-seedsA new green anarchist publication along the lines of Green Anarchy has issued a call for submissions: It has been almost 6 years since the last issue of Green Anarchy. During its 25-issue run, the magazine brought green anarchist ideas to North America and the world. It succeeded as an incubator of ideas and a real provocation for those both inside and outside of the anarchist milieu. In the intervening years, even with drastic changes in terms of green capitalism, technological…

New Zine: Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization

December 09, 2013

Hipster: The Dead End of Western CivilizationAt the past couple of events we have tabled at, one of our more popular titles has been a re-print of the Adbusters article, “Hipster: The Dead End of Western Civilization.” While coming out almost five years ago, it remains one of the best critiques and explorations of the hipster phenomenon. At its most basic level, the article argues that hipsterdom has become a global phenomenon that has no meaning, signified primarily by its participants’ desire…

New Zine: Edible Wild Plants of West Michigan, Vol. 1

December 03, 2013

edible_plants_west_mi_1We’re excited to announce the publication of our latest zine, Edible Wild Plants of West Michigan, Volume 1. As far as we know, it’s the only foraging zine or publication designed specifically around plants that can be found in the greater Grand Rapids area. While there are plenty of other field guides out there that cover a lot more plants, we thought it would be useful to have guide that focuses on a smaller number of plants. It’s far less overwhelming to look for just a…

With an increasing number of states (including Michigan) allowing for the hunting of wolves, this zine outlines one response. It’s been featured on NPR…

Local Wild Plant Profile: Crabapple

November 22, 2013

Crabapples are different from other wild apples in that they are significantly smaller and may appear at first glance to look more like berries than apples. They are bushy, medium-sized trees that grow to a maximum of 15 to 30 feet. There are hundreds of varieties of crabapples, so it is often difficult (and relatively unimportant) to identify the exact variety of the tree. They are found in fields and thickets across the region. They begin ripening in August and last into the fall. Crabapples…
